The building of Oasis...

Each summer our glorious massage stand, like all vending locations on Wreck Beach, is built again from scratch with the help of many.  It is quite an involved experience, requiring much thought, preparation and support from the ever eclectic Community who volunteer to help. We are blessed to create our vendor stands as 'au natural' as possible, in keeping with the preservation of our beloved beach.

Before beginning, logs for the Oasis stand are scoped out  according to size, length and type of wood, from the littered array of excess left from winter storms.  Each chosen log must meet certain parameters, as we want to do as few cuts as possible to save energy, working with the cleanest, smoothest and driest logs we can find.

Once discovered, logs are measured and sawn manually. This takes quite some time and usually involves 2-3 people, as sand must be dug away from under the log for easier saw mobility and log must be suspended to keep the cut open.

Next, comes the daunting task of aligning several groups of 6-8 men simultaneously, to help roll or carry the often wet and heavy logs. Prying Wreck Beacher's away from their quiet enjoyment of music, drinks, lunch, frisbee, swimming or socializing, can often be a challenge and takes quite some convincing to pull everyone together.  With each log move, we lose a few helpers and must find more to do the next.

No one arrives at Wreck with the idea of carrying heavy logs, sometimes long distances down the beach.  Yet we are always blessed at the tremendous support given, often from total strangers who offer their help without expectations.

Back at the vending location, exact specifications for pole placement has been aligned before the logs are brought over.  At least one or two diggers have been busily carving out narrow holes in the sand down to the water line. One 5-6 ft hole can take 15-30 minutes to dig, depending on how diligent the good looking and usually naked helpers are.

After at least six trips, the main support poles will have all been moved to the vending location, many helpers and hours later.  It has taken a huge amount of work and coordination to get everything in place thus far.  Without Wreck Beach Community pulling together, this diligent undertaking would never happen.

Once we have all the pieces in the area, we are ready to lift and set the support poles into the holes that have been measured and prepared by the hard working help.  It takes at least 4-6 men to lift a pole and keep it balanced so it does not take out the side of the hole or fill it up while it is carefully placed in the center.  As the pole is held in balance, the sand is quickly shoveled, filling the sides while the pole settles in.  The sand is trampled firmly and the pole is visually aligned vertically from all angles.

We're almost there!  After a few days of settling and some rain or water to pack down the sand, the poles are corrected again to make sure they are vertically straight. The first part of manifesting the Oasis Massage stand is finally done.

Now we are ready to bring in all the gear to finish creating the ambience of our vending location, in preparation for our beach customers.  As beach vendors, every day we are faced with the task of setting up and taking down our creative marketing spaces.

One must be very smart in set up, product, sales and marketing when it comes to beach business.  Only the die hards survive, as each year, many new vendors have tried and failed.  To do what we do, we must love the beach more than most anything else, or we won't have the inclination or energy to make it happen all summer.  It can be hard work in the sweltering heat and blowing seasonal winds, but it also brings great rewards, as we are blessed to be able to do what we love, for the community we love, in the place we love, as much as life itself.  What a wonderful gift we share!

Summer off 2010-2011 Oasis Massage utilized six yellow cedar poles in a six pointed star formation.   The front and back poles were in direct alignment  with the tall, barren tree where several resident eagles perch behind us up the mountainside.  Intentionally created to make the most of our space both energetically and spiritually, the star formation had a tangibly felt energy within.

The massage tables face the ocean, so the circulating energy of the waves open and clear out a clients head. The feet face the trees so they are grounded into the earth like the roots.  The natives consider the trees as holding the energy of unconditional love. The natural beauty of our surrounding environment also adds much to ones  healing experience.

Come on down, seek us out. We're at the bottom of Trail 6 near Wreck Beach central.
